Hajji Hala Hazimi

Sr. Hala Hazimi is the principal of MAYA School. Her educational background consists of the following:

  • Associates of Arts Degree (Henry Ford Community College under a full academic scholarship)
  • Bachelors of Arts Degree (University of Michigan)
  • Teaching Certificate (State of Michigan)
  • Middle School Math Endorsement (State of Michigan)
  • Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in Education Administration (University of Michigan)
  • Administrators Certificate for grades K-12 (State of Michigan)

Sr. Hala became part of the MAYA family in August of 2002. She was a very influential 5th grade teacher for seven years as well as a middle school math teacher for one year. During her last two years of teaching, she took on the role of Assistant Principal as a part-time position before becoming a full time administrator. As a teacher, she was able to pass along her belief that the key to a good education begins with organization and responsibility. Her students not only excelled academically, but they gained confidence and communication skills both orally and in writing; traits that they can and will carry with them into the future.

Along with her many day-to-day responsibilities when she was the assistant principal, Sr. Hala was also the assessment coordinator, one of the NCA team leaders, and the curriculum director by continuously aligning all core subject areas for grades K-8 to the State GLCEs, and making sure the teachers were continuously adhering to them.

Sr. Hala became principal of MAYA in 2010.  Her main goal is to help take MAYA to the next level by passing along any relevant information that she gained throughout her many years of learning, training, and teaching experiences. She is definitely one of the most dedicated staff members at MAYA who puts forth all her energy and efforts in making each day a success academically, Islamically, and completely for the future of the students.

She says that: “Allah (s.w.t) has given me the opportunity and pleasure of working in such a sound, Islamic school doing what I love most…working with the children of our future and helping to mold them into fine, successful citizens carrying with them Islamic values (Inshallah).  MAYA is near and dear to my heart; I could not imagine being anywhere else.”

earborn in 2003 with a Bachelors of Art in Elementary Education.  She is endorsed to teach K-8 Social Studies and Math.  Sr. Linda taught first grade for 2 years and fifth grade for 3 years before coming to MAYA.  Sr. Linda is currently working on her Masters degree in Science education through the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and will graduate in December, inshallah.

Sr. Linda believes that all children are unique and have the ability to learn.  She also believes that students learn best when they are in a comfortable and cooperative setting, and does her best to provide this for her students.

Sr. Zeinab Hamade

Sr. Zeinab Hamade has been involved with the Muslim American Youth Academy since 2010. She began as a member of our PTC, and then joined in the effort to educate young minds as our current kindergarten teacher. Sr. Zeinab is a highly qualified elementary school teacher. She earned her Associate in Arts degree from HFCC under a full academic scholarship then proceeded to achieve her Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Michigan in 2007. Sr. Zeinab majored in English and achieved a 4.0 grade point average in her major. In 2012, she received her Master’s degree in Special Education with a state endorsement in Learning Disabilities all the while averaging a 4.2 in her Master’s program. Her background in special education has given her the guidance to provide various supports to all children based on their individual needs. She is a strong believer in empowering her students to be independent and responsible. Sr. Zeinab likes to incorporate inquiry based lessons to engage and stimulate her students. It is in her best interest to provide a nurturing, stimulating and interactive learning environment.

Sr. Salma Kazan and Sr. Zeinab Ajrouche – Pre-K 1

Sister Zeinab Ajrouche has been teaching at MAYA School for the past 10 years. In 1997 she graduated from Schoolcraft College with an Associate in Early childhood. She has been an Arabic and Islamic teacher for the past 18 years.

From her experience she has learned to be aware of the feeling and emotions of the children. She believes the love of teaching will influence the children to enjoy learning through a positive style of teaching.

Sr. Salwa Nezam and Sr. Dalal Bazzi – Pre-K 2

Sr. Salwa Nezam has been a teacher for over 20 years. She has a CDA and an Associates Degree in Early Childhood. Her continuing educational efforts include workshops in High Scope Training, Montessori Training, and NAEYC conferences. Sr. Salwa taught at Head Start for 13 years, and has been teaching preschool at M.A.Y.A. for the past seven years.

She believes that preschool years are the most precious years of a child’s life. Her ambition drives her to be very creative and energetic. She sets high, yet achievable goals to all of her students. Her compensation is to watch children learn as they grow. Her goal is to continue to educate children and help service their needs regardless of their diverse potentials.


Sr. Dalal Bazzi is a preschool teacher at the Muslim American Youth Academy.  She received her Child Development Associate degree from Henry Ford Community College. She’s very excited to be here and to share her love of teaching with our youngsters.  She feels that as a childcare provider she will be able to care and educate our nation’s future leaders.

Her goal as a childcare provider is to take care of children and educate them to enrich and develop their Islamic values.  As a parent she feels that she is learning how to be a great child care provider that will be complemented by her formal training at Henry Ford Community College.
She truly believes that she is very professional, organized, and compassionate and that these virtues will allow her to be successful within this profession. Her intentions regarding this profession are completely pure, in that she is going into this profession because it is her lifelong dream.


Sr. Fatme Dakroub – Kindergarten

My name is Sister Fatme, I am a graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration – Management from California State University – Dominguez Hills, CA. I am certified by the State of Michigan in Grades K-5 all subjects, and K-8 self contained class. I also have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential K-12 all subjects by the State of California. In addition to my academics, I have had experience in different school districts; serving for the Dearborn Public Schools, MI, and Murrieta/Corona Unified School Districts, CA. I was involved in the BTSA program (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment), CPTIP (California Professional Teacher Induction Program), and participated in WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Instructional Team.

I also have administered and evaluated all of the required formal assessment including the DRA2 (Developmental Reading Assessment), 3-day Writing Assessment using the 5th grade Writing Proficiency Benchmark Rubric, Gentry Spelling Tests, and District-wide Common Assessment in Dearborn Public Schools. Because of my extensive and diverse experience, I am able to bring a unique teaching style to the classroom by providing my students with the latest teaching methods and techniques that will ensure a wealthy learning environment.

Sr. Hanan Haidous – Kindergarten

Hanan Haidous is married and has four children. She graduated from Spring Arbor University with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education in 2002 and earned her Masters degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education with emphasis in English as a Second Language from Wayne State University in 2013. She has been in the teaching profession since 2010 and started teaching Kindergarten at MAYA in 2013. She absolutely loves it! Hanan feels that it is a pleasure to work with your son or daughter each year as well as the great staff and administration at MAYA. She feels very enthusiastic about the teaching profession, as she greatly believes in raising her youngsters to become knowledgeable and respectful young citizens. MAYA’s mission and vision reflects the core values which she truly considers the principles of her teaching and beliefs.

Sr. Amira Swaydan – 1st Grade

Sr. Amira is the first grade teacher at the Muslim American Youth Academy. She is a graduate of Wayne State University where she received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, majoring in Science. She is currently working on her Masters Degree at Wayne State focusing on English as a Second Language (ESL). Her teaching experience includes subbing for the Dearborn Public Schools as well as volunteering in special education classrooms.

Sr. Lara Audi – 2nd Grade

Laura Audi currently teaches 2nd grade at M.A.Y.A. She taught 2nd grade her at M.A.Y.A back in 2010 for a year, and came back in 2013. She is a highly qualified and certified teacher. She earned her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Wayne State University and her Masters degree in Special Education from the University of Michigan. She has also completed her foreign language endorsement through Wayne State University.

Laura’s experience includes teaching at MAYA, substitute teaching at Dearborn Public schools, teaching 5th grade at a private Islamic school, and 2 years of teaching at H.E.S. Her classroom is a very exciting place to learn! Her students spend the day involved in hands-on activities, small group work, whole group instruction and discussion as well as subject-based activity centers. The students learn and grow to become ready for 3rd grade! She believes that an active role of parents/guardians is essential for the success of a child’s education. She encourages all parents to become active in their child’s education!

Sr. Zeinab Saghir – 4th Grade

Sr. Zeinab Saghir is one of the fourth grade teachers at M.A.Y.A. She has been a part of the M.A.Y.A. staff since 2003. She received her Bachelors of Arts with a major in Science and a minor in Language Arts, and her Teacher Provisional Certificate from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in December of 2002. She has earned her Masters Degree in Arts of Education in 2007.

Sr. Zeinab believes that every child deserves the chance to learn in a unique and diverse environment. Her teaching methods include creativity, imagination, and hands-on activities, which integrate all subject matters across the curriculum.

Sr. Souraya Mouhanna – 4th Grade

Sr. Souraya Mouhanna began teaching 4th grade at M.A.Y.A. school in 2013. She is a graduate from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a Bachelors in Elementary Education (Major: Social Studies) (Minor: Language Arts).  She says that “Being a teacher at M.A.Y.A. has opened my eyes to what a true school should look like. Being a teacher at M.A.Y.A. School is so rewarding. I am able to work with each student since the class ratio is small.”

Sr. Souraya’s goal is to provide each child with an excellent education and get them prepared for not only 5th grade, but for the future. She can assure you that your child will leave her class with information and goals that they will carry with them in their lives forever.

Sr. Linda Mehsen – 5th Grade

Sr. Linda Mehsen’s graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2003 with a Bachelors of Art in Elementary Education.  She is endorsed to teach K-8 Social Studies and Math.  Sr. Linda taught first grade for 2 years and fifth grade for 3 years before coming to MAYA.  Sr. Linda is currently working on her Masters degree in Science education through the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and will graduate in December, inshallah.

Sr. Lila Mouhanna – Middle School Math

Sr. Nancy Rababeh – Middle School Social Studies

Sr. Nancy Rababeh has lived all of her life in Dearborn and in fact graduated from

Fordson High School. After high school Sr. Nancy attended Madonna University where she received her Bachelors of Science in Financial Administration. After graduating from college she got married and had children. She has two boys, both of whom attend Dearborn Public Schools. In fact, it was after her youngest son started preschool that she decided to go back to school to become a teacher.

Sr. Nancy received her post-bachelor teacher certification from the University
of Michigan-Dearborn. She is certified to teach K-8th grades with subject area
endorsements in both mathematics and social studies. Her number one goal as a teacher is to help her students excel in their academic career.

Sr. Shadia Dabaja – Middle School ELA (7th-8th)


Sr. Batoul Tufali – Arabic

Sr. Batoul Tufaili received an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Care at the Technical Center for Arts T.C.A in Lebanon, and a certification for teaching the English language from the National Evangelical School. She attended Central Michigan University for special semesters in early child education. She attained 14 years of work experience as a class educator. She served as a kindergarten teacher at the American Muslim Academy for 5 years and with the American Islamic Academy for an additional 3 years as well as educating our youngest generation as a preschool teacher for two years. Furthermore, she has practiced as an Arabic language teacher for the last 10 years at Albayan and is still educating their beginners in learning to read and write Arabic.

Sr. Batoul joined the MAYA staff as an Arabic teacher. She believes that having education compliment religion in a single institution ensures that students will receive a well rounded education that will embed them with great values that will continue with them for the rest of their lives. As an educator, she feels honored to be a part of those who plant the seeds of knowledge and curiosity that will eventually sprout into the flowers of our future.


Sr. Mirna Saad – Arabic

Sr. Mirna Saad graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1993 with a Bachelors degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences, and with a Special Education Teaching Diploma in 1994.  She joined the MAYA school faculty in 2006 teaching Arabic and Islamics.  She began teaching the Arabic language to middle school students in 2013.  Her main goal is to have students who are actively engaged during their Arabic session, never passive and most importantly never overwhelmed.  She makes sure to build her lesson plans and activities around the students’ knowledge, skills and abilities.

Sr. Hanan Farhat – Arabic Co-Teacher

Sr. Hanan Farhat began working as an Arabic & Islamics teacher since 2013.  Before that, she worked as a substitute teacher at MAYA from 2005 to 2008, worked as an Arabic & Islamic teacher at Al-Bayan Educational Center from 2008 to 2010, and then worked as a bilingual paraprofessional at Oakman Elementary School from 2010 to 2013.

In 2010, she earned an Associate of Arts degree from Wayne County Community College.  Her mission is to guide and challenge her students to be the very best that he or she can become in Arabic and Islamic Studies.   She will do everything she can to help your child reach their highest potential.

Sr. Hanan’s students will learn the Islamic manners, the history of Ahlul-Bayt, as well as learning and memorizing numerous Surahs of the Holy Quran. Her students will also be able to read Arabic letters, words, sentences, and paragraphs; and they will be able to grow and move on with more advanced Arabic skills in years to come.

Sr. Hanan believes that an active role of parents/guardians is essential for the success of a child’s education. She always encourages all parents to become active in their child’s education!

Sr. Nadia Turfah – Islamics

My name is Nadia Turfah. I am very excited to be teaching Islamic and Quran at MAYA School. I have been teaching in different Islamic schools since 1992. I also have a Child Development Certificate.

My goal is to increase the student’s knowledge of Islam, help them develop an understanding of the basic of religion, memorize Suras from the Holy  Quran, and understand the meaning of the Ayat. I also focus on Islamic manners and teach the history of Ahlul Bait (A). This is achieved through positive encouragement in the classroom, support from home, and through communication and cooperative teamwork .

Sr. Dina Hammoud – Islamics

Sr. Dina Hammoud has a degree in Islamic Studies from Hawzat Al-Sayyeda Al-Zahraa (a.s) (Al-Zahraa Institute of Sharia and Islamic Studies) in Lebanon.  She joined the MAYA school staff as an Islamic and Arabic teacher in 2013.  Her goal is to share her knowledge and experience with her students to help them acquire a strong Islamic background and a better understanding of the path of Ahl Albait (a.s).

Br. Hussein Cheaib has been the Athletic Director at M.A.Y.A. for the past eight years. With 30 years of both playing and coaching soccer, Br. Hussein has displayed a natural love for sports. He began his career in 1974 as a player of the Lebanese National Team and came to The United States of America to participate in playing and coaching soccer. Br. Hussein’s extensive soccer experience and reputation has brought him to M.A.Y.A. as a head coach in 1999 for grades kindergarten through 8th grade.

In 1973, he received a silver medal for the 100m track and field. For a second time in 1974, he was given a silver medal for the 400m and 800m track and field. From 1974 – 1979 he was a part of the SAFA Club Professional. In 1982 he was one of the founders of the Lebanese American Club known as the Dearborn Star Soccer Club from 1982-1996. Since then he has participated in numerous coaching courses including the National B coaching course. Br. Hussein holds a “B” youth license form the Lebanese Soccer Federation, a USSF Youth License, and a NSCAA National Advance Diploma.

Currently, he is the head coach of the U10, U11, and U14 Gold at Michigan Wolves and Hawks Soccer Club.

Sr. Rhonda Saab feels very honored and thankful to be part of the MAYA family since 2012.  Her job is to work with students who need extra attention in subject areas such as reading, reading comprehension, math, writing, and test taking.  She believes that the children at MAYA are amazing and loves helping them to improve while watching them grow into wonderful students who are proud of themselves every time they go up a level in reading or writing a complete sentence.
